Fire beater with a telescopic duralumin handle and a 6 mm self-extinguishing synthetic rubber flap. It measures 1,950 mm extended and 1,280 folded, and weighs 1.8 kg.
01 · HOW IT PUTS FIRE OUT
By smothering, not by hitting
A fire beater does not put fire out by thrashing: it puts it out by displacing the air and smothering the flame against the ground. You beat at an angle and inwards, without throwing up embers.
The flap is self-extinguishing synthetic rubber, fabric-reinforced with double reinforcement at the critical points, and its branched design is what makes it last. It measures 250 × 500 mm and is 6 mm thick.
02 · HOW FAR IT GOES
And when to drop it and call
It is for an incipient fire: a tuft of burning grass, a fallen ember, a small low front. That is exactly what can happen in an apiary with a smoker.
If the fire has taken hold in scrub or trees, or grows faster than you can beat, you leave and you call the emergency number. A fire beater is not a means of extinction for an established fire, and staying to try is how people die in wildfires.
03 · THE HANDLE
Telescopic, and why duralumin
The handle is duralumin, 30 mm outside diameter and 25 inside: it does not rust, it takes bending and springs back. Telescopic, it goes from 1.95 m of working length to 1.28 m to carry in the car.
In the high-risk season, many regions require means of extinction to work with fire on forest land. It is worth checking what yours asks for before lighting the smoker in July.
