Instructions for marking the queen:

1. Capturing the queen: Locate the queen on the brood frame. Use a queen clip catcher or, if you are more experienced, catch her with your hands using thin gloves. Gently place the clip over her and slide the grid to trap her without harm. If you choose to catch her by hand, ensure you use thin gloves to avoid damage, as queens are larger and more delicate than worker bees.

2. Position for marking: Place the queen on a flat surface or use a queen marking cage. Ensure she is immobilized without being squeezed, leaving her thorax exposed for easy marking.

3. Correct marking: Hold the marker a short distance (around 3-5 mm) from the queen’s thorax. Apply a single quick stroke of paint to the center of the thorax, avoiding the wings and abdomen. The water-based paint dries quickly, allowing the queen to be returned to the hive in just a few seconds.

4. Returning to the hive: Ensure the paint is dry before releasing the queen. Gently reintroduce her to the hive, preferably on the brood frame where she was found. This reduces the risk of rejection by the worker bees.
