01 · HOW TO PLACE IT

Cut the lid along the dotted line and lay the tray face down

This is the most repeated question and the one that decides whether the product works or makes a mess: the paste stays in its tray. Cut the lid along the dotted line with a craft knife, remove only that strip of plastic and lay the tray face down over the frames, with the cut over the gap between two frames; if it sits on the crown board, line the cut up with the feed hole. The bees feed through the opening and the tray keeps the paste fresh. Turn the paste out bare and the bees sink into it and stick. The maker’s video at the end of this page shows it step by step.

02 · WHAT THE 3 % PROTEIN MEANS

A contribution, not a pollen substitute

3 % crude protein is not a pollen patty. Patties and pollen substitutes work at far higher figures and are used to push brood; this is a maintenance fondant that also carries protein. That protein comes from inactivated yeast, and in the profile the maker declares, the bee’s ten essential amino acids all sit above the minimums set by De Groot. That is its value: it covers the gap when no pollen is coming in, it does not start a laying push.

03 · TEXTURE

A soft paste, for cool weather

The base is sugar with glucose syrup and invert sugar syrup, at 15.5 % moisture: a soft, mouldable paste that the bees take without having to soften it — softer than Apipasta with vitamins, at 10 %. For the same reason heat loosens it, and it can drip through the cut or trap bees: use it in cool weather — autumn, winter and early spring — and if it is warm, put it in early in the day and check it at the next visit. The colour ranges from light to dark brown from batch to batch, and it has a shelf life of 36 months from manufacture, stored somewhere cool and dry.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The box is 14 kg and you choose the format: 14 trays of 1 kg or 28 of 0.5 kg. For nucs and small colonies the half-kilo tray usually suits better, as they finish it sooner.

It fits in the gap between frames and crown board; if you do not have that space, an empty super or a top feeder solves it. And the standing rule: do not feed during a flow if you are going to harvest that honey for sale.
