01 · THE SKIRT

Height to cover what is already inside

A nuc with a top feeder or a layer of insulation is no longer a flush box: there is volume taken up above the frames. The skirt drops 11 cm down the outside of the body and covers that stack without resting on the feed, so the roof seats on the box and not on another part. That is what closes the gap where water gets in or a wasp slips through.

02 · THE MEASUREMENT

Measure the nuc on the outside, that is where it fits

The 50.8 × 28 cm are internal: that is the figure that has to go inside, which means the outside of your nuc. It is the classic mistake when ordering a roof, because the habit is to measure internally. Run the tape along the outer edge of the body, not around the frame space.

03 · THE GALVANISING

It stands the weather, but it is not stainless

Galvanising protects the sheet for as long as the coating is intact. Where it goes is on knocks, edges and burrs: rust starts there and spreads from there. Look it over now and then, and handle the edges with gloves, especially when you stack roofs. A dented roof also stops seating flat, and the gap you came to close opens again.

It weighs a kilo and works as a roof: in windy sites, plan on a weight on top or a strap.
