Details of Apisoda 1,1kg

It is sodium carbonate: an alkaline cleaner. It cleans, which is the step before disinfecting — it does not replace it.

High-grade sodium carbonate for cleaning beekeeping equipment, from Biovet. 1.1 kg pack.

01 · IT CLEANS, IT DOESN'T DISINFECT

And why that matters

Sodium carbonate dissolves grease and lifts the organic residue — propolis, wax, dirt — that water alone will not take off. That is cleaning, and it is essential.

But cleaning is not disinfecting. A disinfectant applied over dirt never reaches the material: it stays on the top layer. That is why the order is always the same — clean with this first, rinse, and only then does disinfecting by whatever method applies make sense.

02 · THE DOSE AND HOW FAR IT GOES

Two spoonfuls per litre

Dissolve two spoonfuls in a litre of water — some 30-40 grams — spray it over the frames and the inside of the hive, leave it ten minutes, scrub with a brush and rinse well.

At that dose, the 1.1 kg pack gives around thirty litres of solution. And it dissolves far better in warm water than cold, which also softens the wax.

03 · IT IS ALKALINE

Gloves and goggles

A carbonate solution is alkaline, and that dries the skin and irritates the eyes if it splashes. Work with gloves and eye protection, especially when spraying.

And do not mix it with acid products: the reaction adds nothing and mixing cleaners is never a good idea. The final rinse is not optional — the alkaline residue has to come off the woodwork.

04 · WHERE NOT TO USE IT

Aluminium and galvanised

Alkali attacks aluminium and zinc. So it is fine on wood, plastic and stainless steel, but avoid leaving aluminium or galvanised parts to soak — queen excluders, zinc-coated sieves, aluminium tools.

On those, a quick pass and an immediate rinse, not a long bath.
